5 Easy Trails for Walking and Biking on the Lakeshore

5 Easy Trails for Walking and Biking on the Lakeshore

You do not have to be a serious cyclist to enjoy the trails here. Most are flat, wide and easy to do in pieces.

These are the five I would point you to, from long rail trails to short family loops. You can bring your own bikes or just go for a walk.

Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

My Favorite Lakeshore Trails

1) Kal-Haven Trailhead

51 Bailey Ave, South HavenMap

The start of the 30 plus mile rail trail from South Haven to Kalamazoo.

You do not need to do the whole thing. Ride out for a while, turn around, and you will still get a great day.

The South Haven trailhead is an easy place to start, and there is a lot of town nearby for lunch when you get back. Bring water and plan your turnaround point before you go.

2) Kal-Haven Trail, Grand Junction Access

54480 County Road 388, Grand JunctionMap

A flat stretch of the 34 mile rail trail.

If you are staying in Grand Junction, this is the easiest way to hop on.

The Grand Junction stretch is quiet and wooded, and it is a nice way to start a slow morning. Since it is flat, it is a good choice for kids and beginners.

3) Van Buren Trail State Park

300 Lovejoy Ave, South HavenMap

A 14 mile trail for biking and walking out of South Haven.

A nice option if you have already done the Kal-Haven and want something new.

The Van Buren Trail is another good option for riders. Like the Kal-Haven, you can do as much or as little as you like and turn around whenever you are ready.

4) Riverside Loop at Schultz Park

301 Riverview Dr, DouglasMap

An easy riverside walk in Douglas with a boat launch and dog park.

Bring the dog. This one is short and relaxed.

Schultz Park is a nice stop for a calm walk by the water. It is also an easy way to fit a little nature into a day spent in Saugatuck and Douglas. It is short enough for a quick walk before dinner.

5) Hiawatha Trail

12524 Stanton St, West OliveMap

A short, flat family trail in Pigeon Creek Park in West Olive.

This is my pick for younger kids.

Pigeon Creek Park is a good place for a family outing. The trail is short and flat, so little legs can manage it, and you can be back in time for lunch. It is a good way to get the kids outside on the first morning.

A trail day is one of the easiest things to add to any trip here. Pack water and a snack and go at your own pace. Go early when it is cooler, and pack a picnic for the end of the ride. Most of these are easy enough that the whole group can come along.

Our Grand Junction homes are minutes from the Kal-Haven Trail. Grand Junction Lake Retreat and Grand Junction Private Lake Escape are both great bases for a weekend of riding and walking.
