5 Winter Hikes on the Lakeshore With the Best Views

A winter hike is one of the best ways to see the lakeshore. The leaves are down, so the views open up.

These five trails are my picks for a cold, clear day. The cold keeps the trails quiet, and the bare trees make the lake easier to see.

Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

My Favorite Winter Hikes

1) Mt. Pisgah

2238 Ottawa Beach Rd, HollandMap

Climb the boardwalk stairs for a view of Lake Michigan and Big Red.

It is a short climb with a big payoff, which makes it the first hike I would recommend to anyone.

Mt. Pisgah is right by Holland State Park, so you can pair it with a walk on the beach. In winter, the stairs can be slick, so take your time and hold the rail. At the top, look for the lighthouse.

2) Hemlock Crossing

8115 West Olive Rd, West OliveMap

Forest and wetland trails along the Pigeon River, with a nature center.

The forest and wetland make a nice change from the open dunes.

Hemlock Crossing is great for a family hike. The nature center is a nice bonus, and the river views are pretty in any season. Bring snacks and give the kids time to explore.

3) Kirk Park Loop

9791 Lakeshore Dr N, West OliveMap

An easy loop through the dunes with lake views.

Good for families and anyone who wants the lake without a hard climb.

Kirk Park is one of my picks for a short winter walk when you do not have a lot of time. You get the dunes and the lake without having to plan your whole day around it. Kids can usually handle it without much complaining.

4) Saugatuck Dunes State Park

6575 138th Ave, HollandMap

Wooded trails to a long empty beach.

In winter you may have that beach to yourself. Give yourself time to sit for a few minutes once you reach the sand.

This is one of the most peaceful winter walks on the shore. Wear good boots, since the trails can be snowy, and bring a thermos of something warm for the beach.

5) Casco Township Nature Preserve

Casco TownshipMap

Bluff top lookouts over the lake. Beach access is closed for now.

Come for the views from the top and plan to stay up on the bluff.

The views from the bluff are worth the trip, especially on a clear winter day. Stay on the trails, and please respect the beach closure.

Bring layers and good boots. The wind off the lake is real, especially at the top of the dunes. Hike in the middle of the day when it is a little warmer, and keep an eye on the early sunset. A thermos of hot cocoa never hurts.

After a cold hike, it is nice to have a warm house to come back to. Holland Home Retreat is close to Mt. Pisgah, West Olive Cottage is close to Kirk Park and Hemlock Crossing, and Saugatuck Cabin is near the state park.
