Grand Junction is where I would go to slow down. It is quiet, wooded and full of small lakes, with South Haven close by when you want a beach town.
Here is my plan for a weekend that mixes a lot of quiet with one trip to the lake. It is the opposite of a busy beach weekend, and that is the point.
Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

My Grand Junction Weekend Plan
1) Country Fare Restaurant
Breakfast close to home.
Start the day here and you are right by the trail for the next stop.
Country Fare is a good, easy breakfast. A slow breakfast is the right start for a slow weekend.
2) Kal-Haven Trail, Grand Junction Access
A flat stretch of the 34 mile rail trail.
Walk or ride as far as you like, then turn back. There is no wrong distance.
The Grand Junction stretch of the trail is quiet and wooded. Bring water and a snack, and take your time. Mornings are the coolest time to go.

3) Jeptha Lake Fen Preserve
A quiet walk through a rare wetland, open dawn to dusk. Plan your visit within those hours.
This is the kind of place that makes Grand Junction feel different from the beach towns.
Jeptha Lake Fen is a peaceful place for a walk. Stay on the trail, move slowly, and enjoy the quiet. Bring binoculars if you like to watch birds.

4) Taste
Dinner in South Haven.
When you are ready for a little more going on, head into town for the evening.
Taste is a nice way to spend an evening in South Haven. After dinner, take a walk downtown or head to the beach for sunset. It is a good way to get a little beach town energy before heading back to the quiet. Make a reservation if you can.
5) Van Buren State Park
Big dunes and a wide sandy beach. It is the best of both worlds: a quiet base inland and a big Lake Michigan beach a short drive away.
Save this for the afternoon you want a Lake Michigan beach day.
Van Buren State Park is a great Lake Michigan beach day. Bring a towel, sunscreen and snacks, and plan to stay a while. The dunes are a fun climb for kids.
Grand Junction is not about a packed schedule. It is about a slow morning, a walk in the woods and a quiet evening. Slow down, get outside, and save the beach for when you want it. That is the beauty of Grand Junction. Give yourself permission to do less, and Grand Junction will take care of the rest.
Our Grand Junction homes are on the water and surrounded by woods. Grand Junction Lake Retreat and Grand Junction Private Lake Escape are both ready for your slow weekend.
