Lake Michigan can be rough, but the rivers and inland lakes here are perfect for paddling.
Here is where to rent, from Lake Macatawa to Spring Lake to the Black River. All of these are seasonal, so check hours before you go. The calm water is perfect for families and first timers.
Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

Where to Rent on the Water
1) Mac Adventures
Kayak, paddleboard and boat rentals in Macatawa.
A good place to start if you are staying in Holland.
Lake Macatawa is a good spot for a calm paddle. Go early in the day when the boat traffic is light.
2) Holland Water Sports
Jet skis, boats and paddleboards near the state park.
Pair it with a beach day at Holland State Park.
Holland Water Sports is a good option if your group wants to try a few different things. Some want to paddle, some want to ride, and everyone can find something. It is close to the beach, so you can paddle in the morning and swim in the afternoon.
3) Retroboat Rentals
Captain your own vintage style electric boat in Saugatuck.
Not a paddle, but it is one of the most fun ways I know to spend an afternoon on the water here.
Retroboat is a fun way to see Saugatuck from the water. Take it slow and enjoy the ride.

4) Lakeshore Kayak Rental
Kayaks and paddleboards on Spring Lake.
A nice option if you are up near Grand Haven.
Spring Lake is a nice spot for paddling, with calmer water than Lake Michigan. It is a good choice for families and beginners. Ask about the best route for your group when you pick up your gear.

5) Adventure Watersports
Boat and jet ski rentals in South Haven by reservation.
Book ahead so you are not disappointed.
Adventure Watersports is a good choice for a bigger day on the water. Since rentals are by reservation, book before you head out.
6) Black River Cruises and Rentals
Pontoons and kayaks on the Black River in South Haven.
The river is a calm way to see South Haven from the water.
The Black River is a peaceful place to paddle, and it is a nice way to spend a summer evening.
My advice: save the big lake for swimming on calm days, and do your paddling on the rivers and inland lakes. Wear a life jacket, bring sunscreen, and check the weather before you go. A calm morning on the water is one of the best ways to start a summer day. Then reward yourself with a slow afternoon back at the house.
Our Grand Junction homes are on inland lakes, made for a paddle. Grand Junction Lake Retreat and Grand Junction Private Lake Escape are both right on the water.
