The Black River runs right through South Haven to the lake. It is where a lot of the town's summer life happens. Boats come and go all day, and there are spots to eat and drink right on the water.
A day on and along the river is one of my favorite ways to spend a summer afternoon. Here is how I would do it. You can do all of it without ever moving the car very far.
Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

How to Spend a Day on the Black River
1) Black River Cruises and Rentals
Start with Black River Cruises and Rentals, which has pontoons and kayaks on the Black River. A pontoon is great for a group, kayaks if you want to work a little.
It is seasonal, so check ahead and reserve if you can.
If you are not sure how long to rent for, start with a shorter window. You can always add more time on the next trip.
2) Michigan Maritime Museum
The Michigan Maritime Museum sits right on the river, with Great Lakes boats and history. It is a nice break from the sun in the middle of the day.
Take your time with the boats.
It is a good one for kids who are into boats, and for grown ups who want a little history with their beach trip.

3) Admiral Jack's
Admiral Jack's is a floating tiki bar on the Black River. Late afternoon is the time for it.
It is seasonal, so make sure it is open before you plan around it.
It is a fun way to see the river from a different angle, with a drink in hand.

4) Captain Lou's
Finish with dinner on the riverfront at Captain Lou's. Sit outside and watch the boats head out toward the lake.
It is a seasonal spot, so it is a summer only part of the plan.
If you only have one night in South Haven, this is how I would spend it. Ask for a table outside if you can.
Boats in the morning, a little history, a tiki drink and dinner by the water. That is South Haven in summer.
South Haven Cottage is close to the river and downtown, so the whole day is right there. Come stay with us.
