The 4 Best Spots to Watch the Sun Set Over Lake Michigan

The 4 Best Spots to Watch the Sun Set Over Lake Michigan

We are on the east side of Lake Michigan, which means the sun sets over the water every night.

It is my favorite part of any day here. These are the places I send guests to watch it. Bring a blanket, a warm layer and someone you like.

Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

My Favorite Sunset Spots

1) Holland State Park

Watch the sun drop behind Big Red.

It is the classic Holland sunset, and it never gets old.

Go early in summer if you want a good spot near the channel. Stay until the colors fade.

2) Mt. Baldhead, Saugatuck

Climb the stairs for a view over the dunes and the lake, then head down to Oval Beach.

This is my pick if you want to work a little for your view.

The stairs at Mt. Baldhead are a workout, but the view is worth it. Watching the sun from the top and then walking down to Oval Beach is one of my favorite evenings on the lakeshore. Wear shoes with good grip for the stairs.

3) South Haven's South Beach

The lighthouse and the pier make a classic sunset photo.

Bring a blanket and sit in the sand.

South Beach is a great sunset spot for families. The kids can play in the sand while you watch the sky. The pier and the lighthouse look especially pretty against an orange sky.

4) Grand Haven's pier

Walk the boardwalk and stay for the colors.

On rough days, enjoy the pier from the beach instead of walking out.

Grand Haven's boardwalk is perfect for a slow walk before the sun goes down. The pier and the lighthouse look great in the evening light. It is one of the classic sunset walks on the lakeshore.

5) Tip

Check the sunset time and get there 20 minutes early.

Here's a secret: the best color is often right after the sun goes down. Do not pack up the second it drops.

In summer, bring bug spray and a jacket. In the off season, bring a hat and gloves. The lake wind picks up as the sun goes down.

A Lake Michigan sunset is the simplest plan there is. No tickets, no reservations, just show up. Pick a spot each night of your stay and see which one you like best. There is something about ending the day facing the water that makes any trip feel complete. It is free, it is easy, and it is different every single night.

Every one of our homes is a short drive from a Lake Michigan sunset. Holland Home Retreat, Saugatuck Cabin, South Haven Cottage and West Olive Cottage put you close to the spots on this list.
