5 Dune Climbs and Lookouts With the Best Views on the Lakeshore

5 Dune Climbs and Lookouts With the Best Views on the Lakeshore

The dunes along this shore are part of the largest freshwater dune system in the world. That is a pretty great thing to have in your backyard. Few places let you climb a mountain of sand and look out over a lake that looks like an ocean.

A few of them have stairs and trails to the top. These are the climbs I would put on your list, with a payoff at every one. Some are short and easy, and some will make you work for it.

Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

My Favorite Dune Climbs

1) Mt. Baldhead

769 Park St, SaugatuckMap

Mt. Baldhead in Saugatuck has over 300 stairs to the top. Yes, you will feel it.

The views of the town and the lake make every step worth it. Take a break halfway if you need to. Everyone does.

Go in the morning or near sunset when it is cooler. The light is better then, too.

2) Mt. Pisgah

2238 Ottawa Beach Rd, HollandMap

Mt. Pisgah in Holland is a short stair climb to the top of the dune, with a view of Big Red. This is the easier one, and a good choice for kids.

It is on Ottawa Beach Road, so pair it with an afternoon at Holland State Park.

It is a great one to do before dinner, since the climb is quick and the view is worth it.

3) Rosy Mound Natural Area

13925 Lakeshore Dr, Grand HavenMap

Rosy Mound Natural Area in Grand Haven is a dune trail through the woods to a quieter beach. It is more of a walk than a climb, with a beach waiting at the end.

Bring your swimsuit.

The walk through the woods is shady, which makes it a good pick on a hot day.

4) Saugatuck Dunes State Park

6575 138th Ave, HollandMap

Saugatuck Dunes State Park has secluded beaches at the end of wooded dune trails. You earn the beach with a walk through the trees.

Personally, I think this is one of the most peaceful spots on the whole shore.

Pack water and snacks. You will want to stay a while once you reach the beach.

5) Van Buren State Park

23960 Ruggles Rd, South HavenMap

Van Buren State Park in South Haven has big dunes and a wide sandy beach. Climb, then cool off in the lake.

It is a great anchor for a South Haven day.

If you are staying near South Haven, this is the dune day to plan around.

Bring water and wear shoes. The sand gets hot in July, and bare feet on a sunny dune in the afternoon is a lesson you only need once.

Our homes put you within a short drive of these climbs. Come stay with us and see the lake from the top.
