Lake Michigan makes its own weather. A sunny afternoon can turn cool and windy by sunset, any time of year. The lake keeps things cooler in summer and wilder in winter.
I have been an Airbnb Superhost since 2015, and this is the packing list I give guests. It works in every season. Start with layers and build from there.
Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

My Lake Michigan Packing List
1) Layers, Always
Even in July, evenings on the beach get cool. Bring a sweatshirt and a light jacket no matter the season.
Layers are the one thing that never goes wrong here.
A hat and a warm pair of socks do not take up much room, and you will be glad you have them when the wind picks up after dark.
2) Summer
Pack swimsuits, water shoes for the rocky spots, sunscreen and a beach umbrella.
The sun off the water is stronger than you think. Reapply more than you think you need to.
Bring a cooler and a beach bag, too, so you can stay out for the whole afternoon.

3) Fall and spring
Bring rain jackets, warm socks and shoes you do not mind getting muddy on the trails.
Orchards and pumpkin patches get muddy fast, so leave the nice sneakers at home.
A pair of rain boots is a smart call if you plan to spend time on the trails or at the orchards.

4) Winter
Pack snow boots, gloves and a warm hat. Bring skates or sleds if you have them.
And plan on a lot of hot chocolate.
Layers matter even more in winter. The wind off the lake can make a cold day feel colder.
5) For the House
Bring your favorite coffee, a few board games and something to grill.
Check the listing for what each home has, so you know what you need to pack.
A few comfort items from home go a long way toward making the house feel like yours for the weekend.
Questions about a specific house? Just ask. We are happy to help you pack for it.
