West Michigan is made for family trips. Short drives, lots of beaches and plenty of ice cream. Lots of things to do and plenty of space to run.
As a mom of school age kids, I look for stops that work for the whole family. These are the ones kids ask to go back to.
Why this blog? Hi, I'm Katie. My family and I run Mitten Rentals, and I have been hosting vacation rentals for more than ten years (Superhost since 2015). This is where I share the places I send our own guests along the West Michigan lakeshore.

My Favorite Lakeshore Stops for Kids
1) Nelis' Dutch Village
Nelis' Dutch Village in Holland has little rides, farm animals, wooden shoe carving and Dutch dancing. It is made for kids.
It is seasonal, so check the dates before you plan your day around it.
Give yourselves time to see it all.
2) Windmill Island Gardens
Windmill Island Gardens in Holland has a working Dutch windmill from the 1700s, surrounded by canals and gardens. It is especially pretty in tulip season.
Kids love seeing a real windmill up close.
It is a nice pick for families who want to slow down and walk the gardens.

3) Saugatuck Dune Rides
Saugatuck Dune Rides is a bumpy, sandy ride over the dunes. It is open May through October.
This is the one that gets the biggest reaction.
Make a reservation ahead, especially on summer weekends.
4) Kid's Corner
Kid's Corner is a big wooden playground in South Haven. Kids can burn off a lot of energy there.
Bring snacks and let them run.
It is a great spot for a quick break between the beach and dinner.

5) Captain Sundae
Captain Sundae in Holland is the pirate ship ice cream stand, scooping since 1980.
The ship alone is worth the trip.
Go after dinner for the perfect end to a summer day.
6) Crane's Orchards
Crane's Orchards in Fennville has u-pick fruit, cider donuts and the pie pantry. A fall favorite for families.
Get the donuts. Everyone will thank you.
It is a great family day out in the fall, with plenty to do for every age.
Many of our homes have a yard and a fire pit, so the s'mores can happen at home, too.
Pack the car and come stay with us. The kids will be planning the next trip before you leave.
